Last Week on Social - May15

Hello again, and thanks for checking out Last Week on Social, a blog series dedicated to providing a simple way to stay on top of the latest news and announcements from each of the major social media networks.

Every week, we round-up the latest updates from Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Twitter, Vine, YouTube, and others that may impact the way you use social media networks for your business.

For the period of May 9 – 15, here’s a breakdown of news from last week on social:


Dynamic Ads for Travel 

Targeting options such as location and time have been added for advertisers aiming to serve relevant messages to people that have expressed interest in traveling to specific destinations, during specific timeframes.

Updates to Custom Audiences

Additional options for custom audiences from your website have been added to help advertisers target site visitors who display different behaviours and meet specific criteria. Examples include frequency, time spent, dynamic date, aggregated values, and devices.


New Branding and App Update

New branding simplifies the Instagram icon, and the updated app places greater emphasis on photos while retaining existing navigation.


Updated Icons for Layout, Boomerang & Hyperlapse

An extension of rebranding efforts, Instagram has redesigned icons for Layout, Boomerang, and Hyperlapse to create visual consistency while communicating the unique abilities of each app.


Dynamic Ads on Instagram 

Similar to Facebook’s offering, Dynamic ads are now available on Instagram. Dynamic ads enable advertisers to automate the process of targeting specific individuals with specific creative based on mobile app or website browsing history.


Affiliate Links on Pinterest

Affiliate links are once again allowed on Pinterest as a result of the introduction of stronger anti-spam detection. 


Short-Term Tumblr Labs Experiments 

“Tumblr Labs are experimental features that were designed and developed in someone’s spare time. Labs are not guaranteed to work the first time or any time.” … this is probably all you need to know.

In spite of the limited and uncertain nature of Labs experiments, here are a few specifics: experiments range from advanced scheduling options (which could be useful), to enabling users to change your dashboard into a, ‘…beautiful illegible rainbow’ (which will probably never be useful).


LinkedIn, Twitter, Vine, and YouTube all had quiet news weeks with no announcements worth reporting.
