Every week, we round-up the latest updates from Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Twitter, Vine, YouTube, and others that may impact the way you use social media networks for your business.
For the period of April 4 – 10, here’s a breakdown of news from last week on social:
Using object recognition technology, Facebook will now generate descriptions of photos for those who are visually impaired.
Live for Groups and Events will enable users to broadcast strictly to people in a given Group, or that are interested in a particular Event.
Live reactions enable users to express themselves to a broadcaster in real-time using the same options available in the news feed: love, haha, wow, sad or angry.
Replay comments – you guessed it – will replay comments as they happened for users watching past Live broadcasts.
Five Live filters have been added to enable people to customize their broadcasts. Additionally, the ability to draw or doodle on your video will be added in the near future.
Users now have the option to send invitations with accompanying push notifications to friends with whom they’d like to watch a particular Live broadcast.
The Facebook mobile app will feature a dedicated place to discover live video, live video from friends and creators that matter most to you, and live video on topics you have a proven interest in.
Facebook Live Map on desktop is a visual way to explore live broadcasts from around the world.
Facebook announced two new metrics that admins will have access to via Page Insights: 1) Live broadcast audience, which is the total number of unique people who watched a video while it was live, and 2) Viewers during live broadcast, which is a visual representation of the number of viewers during each moment of the live broadcast.
If relevant, live video is now shown in topics that are trending and in search.
Facebook has updated their Page Terms and Ads Policy to allow certain types of branded content on the platform. Essentially these changes require publishers and influencers to tag the marketer in the piece of branded content to make it clear that the post is branded content.
The branded content tool was designed to enable publishers and influencers to tag marketers in branded content, and to also give marketers access to high-level insights on the post, including engagement and reach.
This tool also gives marketers the option of sharing and boosting branded content posts with paid support.
To make it easier for users to find and connect with businesses on Facebook and Messenger, usernames are being introduced over the next few weeks. Usernames will appear beneath your Page’s name and will be identical to the vanity URL that you’ve created for your Page.
Messenger Links and Codes are both tools that Facebook is introducing to make it easy for people to connect with businesses in Messenger.
Messenger Links are short links that open directly into a conversation with a business in Messenger.
Messenger Codes are unique visual codes (think nicer looking QR codes) that people can scan in Messenger with their camera, again to open directly into a conversation with a business.
Promoted pins are being launched in the UK with select partners.
Users can now add Tweets to private messages via a new option that appears beneath every tweet in the timeline.
Instagram, LinkedIn, Vine and YouTube all had quiet news weeks with no announcements worth reporting.
